2014 Bioethics Bowl Competition

We are extremely grateful to Joelle Rebeiz and Maggie Cleary, two undergrads with immense prior experience with these competitions, for helping to write and research cases. We presented well-researched and morally rich cases on disconnecting LVADs, parents' decisions to refuse vaccines for their children, surrogate decision-making standards when the patient's wishes are unclear, nanny states and public health interventions, and sexual relationships among residents with dementia. Our team traveled to San Antonio, Texas to compete in our second ever national championship! Including GU, there were 32 teams competing at the debate. The day was split into preliminaries, quarter finals, semi-finals, and finals. We were excited to present our hard work and meet other students and professors from around the country.
We debated, among other things, cases on hunting ranches with endangered species, geoengineering to combat climate change, international art loans, and doctor disclosure practices regarding prenatal tests. At the competition, our team lost by a tiny margin during the preliminary rounds. We still had a wonderful time working together. After the debate, we toured San Antonio, took a cruise along the River Walk, and ate some tasty Mexican food as a group.
